Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a long-isolated country that opened up to U.S. tourists in 2011. It’s an emerging destination, one I was eager to see before McDonald’s set up shop outside Shwedagon, the country’s most famous stupa. The thing about emerging destinations, though, is that they often don’t have the travel infrastructure to support tourism. Things we take for granted — buying airline tickets online or finding English-speaking guides — can be difficult. With this in mind, we booked the trip with veteran tour operator Abercrombie & Kent, known for its hands-on experiences around the globe.
